When Self Care Isn't Glamorous

Self care has definitely become a trendy topic. Especially around this time of the year when personal energy can be pulled in so many directions, the reminders to 'take care of you' are abundant.

While I completely agree with these reminders, I can't help but wonder how many are engaging in activities (baths, naps, trips, brunch, etc.) and still feel a lack of peace.

Self care can absolutely be luxurious, exquisite, sensual, and indulgent but at its core it shouldn't be a way to escape.

I believe self care isn't always going to feel good..and that's okay. Prioritizing your well being will test your limits.

Here are a few overlooked practices that may not be warm and fuzzy, yet they're intentional and just as helpful:

Presence

Staying true to what is alive for you in the moment is so important. No matter if its extreme joy, or the verge of depression, your honesty is necessary your well being. This level of honesty doesn't always have to be expressed to others, but it must be acknowledged within ourselves.

Additionally being present allows you to experience the fullness of life...even from those around you. We've heard it before, but rather than projecting our thoughts into the future or past, relish in the gift of now.

Grace

Let's face it, we're not always going to get it right. Some days we're consistent and firing off on all cylinders, other days our laundry is overflowing, or we're polishing off an entire sweet potato pie (my confession).

There's no need to spiral down the path of giving up, self-loathing or punishment. Give yourself the grace to not have it all together, and trust your pace knowing you'll get back on track.

Experience

Creating a new experience for yourself is the only way are the to re-wire the limiting stories we've held onto.

Whether its taking an intentional vacation solo when you usually travel with groups, walking a trail instead of going to the gym, or speaking up in that meeting when you're usually silent. Whatever it may be you'll be lead to a truth you'll REALLY believe because of the experience.

What comes to mind for you?

What area of self care have you forgotten that's calling for your attention?

Love and gratitude,
Keandra
